Singapore Location & Geography:

Singapore is located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula at the narrowest point of the Strait of Malacca, which is the shortest sea route between India and China. With a total land area of 721.5 square kilometres (278.6 sq mi), Singapore is a small, heavily urbanised, island.

Singapore Island, though small, has a varied topography. The center of the island contains a number of rounded granitic hills that include the highest point, the 165- meter Bukit Timah Peak. The western and southwestern regions are composed of a series of northwest to southeast tending ridges, which are low but quite steep.

Singapore Weather & Climate:

Due to its geographical location and maritime exposure, Singapore’s climate is characterised by uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity and abundant rainfall. The average temperature is between 25 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms occur on 40% of all days. Relative humidity is in the range of 70% – 80%. April is the warmest month, January is the coolest month and November is the wettest month.

Although the climate is fairly uniform, there are some variations in the course of the year due to the two monsoons: the north-east monsoon, which occur from November to early March and is more rainy, especially in the first part, and the south-west monsoon, which occur from June to September.

Singapore Culture:

The culture of Singapore is a combination of Asian and European cultures. Despite its small size, the local customs and culture in Singapore are unique and a mixture of various ethnic influences. All this has its roots in the country’s history as a trading hub. Influenced by Malay, South Asian, East Asian, and Eurasian cultures, Singapore has been dubbed as a country where "East meets West", "Easy Asia" and "Garden city".

The old streets of Chinatown can still be seen; the Muslim characteristics are still conspicuous in Arab Street; and Little India along Serangoon Road still has its distinct ambience. Furthermore, there are marks of the British colonial influence in the Neo-Classical buildings all around the city.

Singapore Economy:

Singapore has a highly developed and successful free-market economy. It enjoys an open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP higher than that of most developed countries.

The Singapore economy is mainly driven by exports in electronics manufacturing and machinery, financial services, tourism, and the world’s busiest cargo seaport. Despite its small domestic market and a lack of natural resources, Singapore successfully weathered through the financial crises of 1997 and 2008. Today, the Singapore economy is one of the most stable in the world, with no foreign debt, high government revenue and a consistently positive surplus.

Singapore Flora & Fauna:

Singapore has a wide variety of flora. Plants are mainly used to beautify the landscape of Singapore. The national flower is a hybrid orchid, Vanda Miss Joaquim. As in any tropical rainforest Singapore is home to a number of very large trees from the families Apocynaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Fabaceae, Malvaceae and others. A number of these thrive reasonably, but for the large Shorea gratissima there's a problem - seeds won't germinate, and the reason for this is not known.

Singapore has about 65 species of mammals, 390 species of birds, 110 species of reptiles, 30 species of amphibians, more than 300 butterfly species, 127 dragonfly species and over 2,000 recorded species of marine wildlife.
